About Cracow

Cracow is the Royal Capital City one of the largest and the oldest cities in Poland. Situated upon Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region. The capital of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland from 1038 to 1569. Cracow’s historic centre (the Old Town, Kazimierz and the Wawel Castle) was included as the first of its kind on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Cracow is also known as the city of churches (more than a 100 of them) and major centre of education (over 25 institutions of higher education with around 120 000 students attend there).

City is famous for its historical buildings. Wawel castle is one of the most outstanding constructions. It’s located by Vistula River on the Wawel Hill. It was the seat of Polish kings over five centures. The Main Square in Cracow is the largest Medieval square in Europe. You can find there the Cloth Hall (which was built in 13th century), with The Gallery of Polish Art as well as the Underground Museum. In front of it there is the Mickiewicz statue (famous Polish poet) and St. Mary’s Church, known as Mariacki church with alter made by Veit Stoss – the most precious item of the basilica. From the tower of Mariacki Church you can hear the bugle call played every hour – typical tradition of Cracow. On the other side of the Main Square it is located Twon Hall Tower.

Another important places around the Main Square are Floriańska Gate, Barbican, Słowacki Theatre, Holy Cross Church, Collegium Maius and Franciscan Church with its Monastery. All of them are historic buildings dating back to past times.

The last place which is included to the Old Town is Kazimierz district. It was established in the 14th century. Abandoned and neglected after the war, Kazimierz today is regaining its former brilliance. It is Europe’s second largest and most precious complex of Jewish historical sites (besides Josefov in Prague). In the district you can visit seven Jews synagogues.
